According to Coxe, this gout well was once famous. Although small, the spring well was once regularly visited on the 1st of May for the curing of gout by washing in or drinking of the water and "deposit of some inconsiderable trifle". Coxe also mentions the consequences that befell a piper who took some of the money from here to buy a drink at the local pub.
